Engineering Investigations, inspections & assessments

Engineering Inspections

Structural Engineer inspections are one of the most important and sought after services provided by VANN BOMA Engineering. The Structural inspections allow the engineer to gain an overall understanding of the project by visually identifying all aspects and details.

Our engineering inspection services can be useful to provide insight, ranging from minor issues involving concerned home owners to larger more complex issues such as industrial plant structural integrity assessments. After each inspection an engineering letter, certificate or report is issued based on the client’s preference, detailing the outcomes of the inspection.

Some of the most common purposes requiring Structural inspections , include:

  • Construction works alterations/ modifications to suit site conditions
  • To obtain post construction Engineering certification
  • Quality Assurance or peer review
  • For Remedial works design
  • Structural capacities e.g. floor ratings
  • Structural adequacy assessment

Engineering Investigations

Engineering Investigations, or otherwise known as Forensic Engineering, involves the investigation of engineering failures, ranging from serviceability to catastrophic failure.

VANN BOMA Engineering has provided assistance in various projects requiring Forensic Engineering expertise, including civil and structural elements.

Our experience has mostly included serviceability failures, however you can be rest assured that we have the knowledge and expertise to undertake any challenge. Some examples of our past projects in this area include:

  • House pre-purchase  structural inspections and reporting
  • Excessive cracking in concrete structures such as pavements or swimming pool coping
  • Ongoing structural cracks in suspended concrete slabs
  • Ongoing cracks in house internal walls, including timber framed or brick construction
  • Noticeable bowing, deflections or structural cracks in retaining walls

Remedial Works

Remediation of existing structures is a common activity in the building and construction industry. However they are not always done properly as in most cases the builder or contractor provides a temporary fix rather than finding a solution to the root cause of the problem.

VANN BOMA Engineering provides unrivalled services in remedial design and specification at all stages of the design life of all types of structures. We assess each problem by undertaking Engineering investigations to determine the underlying causes before specifying any remedial works. You can rest assured that our remedial designs and specifications focus on achieving long-lasting solutions, being cost effective and practical.

Some examples of our remedial services and typical defects include:

  • Structural Inspections and assessment of deteriorated structures or elements
  • Advice on the causes of deterioration including cracking, excessive rust, excessive deflections, etc…
  • Advice on possible remedial measures or alternatives
  • Corrosion damage
  • Fire damage
  • Concrete cracking and concrete cancer
  • Excessive deflections in structures
  • Failure of structural elements
  • Deformed steel structures or elements
